Effect of Drilling Parameters and Tool Geometry on the Thrust Force and Surface Roughness of Aerospace Grade Laminate Composites

Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have been specially developed to enhance the performance of commercial and military aircraft because their strength, high stiffness-to-density ratios, superior physical properties. On other hand, fasteners joints CFRP materials may be weak due occurring surface roughness delamination problems during drilling operations. This study’s aim is investigate characterization CFRPs with different parameters cutting tools. Drilling tests were performed Taguchi orthogonal array design (L18: 2^1 3^3). Tests conducted three levels speed (15, 30, 45 m/min), feed rate (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 mm/rev), two drill diameter (3 5 mm), types drills (two twist a point angle 138° 120° one brad drill). Thrust forces recorded tests, afterwards hole measured. Obtained results analyzed two-way ANOVA. The general tendency was that low speed, rate, small caused an increase in thrust force. Surface decreases increasing tool diameter, decreasing feed, speed. Delamination factors samples dropped depending on force levels. Remarkably, it possible control factor values via better quality. larger negative effect quality CFRPs. According all results, m/min 0.05 mm/rev using type II having mm (12th trial) 30 3 (2nd determined as optimum conditions.
